Is Aging a Disease? Why this question can change your life

When I first read the sentence “Is aging a disease?” in an article by Dr. Michael Greger, I frowned. Aging… a disease? My first reaction was: Huh? What does he mean by that?
But the further I read, the clearer the essence became.

Why that question is so important
Greger explains that disease usually comes naturally if you just live long enough . And that is true: the risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic conditions doubles as we get older. Not because we are unlucky, but because our cells, hormones, and systems slowly become less efficient.
His point is sharp: We focus primarily on disease control — treating when the damage has already been done. But by then, we are actually too late.
The real question should be:
Can we slow down the aging process?
The answer is: yes. Absolutely.
Don't stop — aging is a natural process — but slow down . And you have much more influence on how you age than most people think.
Biological age vs. chronological age
Epidemiological research shows time and again that people who master healthy lifestyle skills:
age more slowly ,
have less inflammatory activity ,
have a younger biological age than their passport indicates.
Unfortunately, we are also seeing the reverse increasingly often: children being diagnosed with conditions that we used to see only in the elderly. Lack of exercise, ultra-processed food, and chronic stress lead to a bad start.
The question then is: will they be able to get this corrected later?
Why slowing down isn't rocket science — but does require awareness
We live in an obesogenic environment : a world that tempts us to exercise too little and eat too much ultra-processed food. Not by coincidence. The industry knows exactly how our brains work.
That is why knowledge is so important. If you want to slow down your aging process and lower your risk of disease, you need to know what you can influence .
Here are the key pillars.
It is not about prolonging life.
And let one thing be clear: Slowing down aging is not about endlessly prolonging life. As a society, we have perhaps become all too good at that.
It is about living as disease-free as possible with the time we have here on earth. Not living longer at any cost, but living better — with vitality, clarity, strength, and quality. That is what true anti-aging is about.

1. Nutrition: the basis of slower aging
Eat all the colors of the rainbow . Choose antioxidant-rich foods with powerful substances such as:
chlorophyll
sulforaphane
lycopene
ergotheine
anthocyanins
phytonutrients
carotenoids
flavonoids
glutathion
beta-glucans
You don't have to remember all these terms, but they are important if you want to understand how your cells stay younger.
Furthermore:
Eat as much plant-based food as possible
Not too much, not too often
Drink enough water
Activate your autophagy (cell recycling)
Keep your low-grade inflammation under control
Lower your mTOR and IGF‑1 through smart food choices
2. Move — but above all: do something you enjoy
Exercise is one of the most powerful anti-aging tools.
Walking or jogging in nature
Weightlifting with free weights
Light daily exercise, more intense stimuli weekly
It is not about perfection, but about consistency .
3. Sleep: the forgotten superpower
A good sleep rhythm is crucial. During sleep, you recover, eliminate waste products, and reduce inflammation. Sleep deprivation accelerates aging — period.
4. Social connection
People with strong social relationships live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Loneliness accelerates aging just as much as smoking.
5. Meaning and mindset
Resentment, hatred, envy, and negativity are toxic. Literally.
Live altruistically. Wish others the best. Be consciously kind. Karma also works biologically: positive emotions lower stress hormones and inflammation.
6. Sun and skin health
Enjoy the sun, but be alert. Excessive exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer. Use sunscreen — and no, that won't give you cancer.
7. Keep an eye on your biomarkers
Values that say something about your aging rate:
stable blood sugar
healthy blood pressure
healthy weight
low CRP (inflammatory marker)
These tell you the true state of your body.
Anti-aging isn't in an expensive cream — it's a lifestyle
When we hear the word anti-aging , we quickly think of expensive serums, Botox, or plastic surgery. But that is only the outside.
True anti-aging happens from within .

So… is aging a disease?
It may require a small shift in our mindset. But if we view aging as a process that can be influenced, then hope emerges.
Because we can do so much to slow it down. And by doing so, we increase our chances of a healthy, vital, and meaningful life.
